The Mini Dachshund originated in Germany, where it was bred for hunting by reducing the size of the standard Dachshund.
Mini Dachshunds are quite small, generally weighing between 8-11 pounds and measuring 5-6 inches in height. They come in three coat types: smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired, and in a variety of colors and patterns. Their distinctive coat requires varying degrees of grooming, with the longhaired needing regular brushing to avoid matting, and the wirehaired needing regular stripping.
